Just The Facts: Canadians Spending More On Taxes Than Basic Necessities

July 30, 2024

Ottawa, ON – After nine years of Justin Trudeau, everything has become more expensive. The cost of housing has doubled while families are paying $700 more for groceries this year than they did in 2023. Millions of Canadians are having to rely on food banks just to survive.

As Canadians are struggling just to keep their heads above water, Justin Trudeau is raising taxes on people at the worst possible time. According to a new report from the Fraser Institute, Canadians are now paying more in taxes than they do on food, shelter, clothing and other necessities combined. In fact, under this Liberal Government, a family making $107,000 is now paying $47,000 in taxes.

Since Trudeau became Prime Minister, the average Canadian family is paying $10,000 more in taxes than they were nine years ago. While Trudeau raised everyone’s taxes, his inflationary spending made life more expensive for everyone.

As the Fraser Institute said in their report, “taxes have grown much more rapidly than any other single expenditure.” Under Trudeau, the average Canadian family now spends more of their income on taxes (43.0 percent) than they do on basic necessities such as food, shelter, and clothing combined (35.6 percent). Nobody can afford this.

Canadians are experiencing a cost-of-living crisis. Yet Trudeau’s only response has been to hike taxes even further. In April, Trudeau decided to increase his carbon tax by 23 percent, as part of his plan to quadruple the carbon tax by 2030. And this spring, Trudeau introduced another job-killing tax hike on health care, homebuilding, small businesses, and farmers, which will drive even more investment out of the country.

Only Common Sense Conservatives will end the inflationary spending and cut taxes so Canadians can bring home more of what they earn.
